I sat at his bedside, not realizing that these would be the last fleeting moments in the sunset of his life.

“Grandpa, can I play you a song?”

I sat at the piano to play the arrangement of “Things of Heaven” by Red Rocks Worship that I have been writing for the album, and returned to his bedside—placing my hand on his shoulder.

A few short minutes later, his breathing stopped, his heart slowed, and he peacefully passed—fulfilling his earthly mission at the age of 89.

This was the man that had given me my first piano when I was only 3 years old. A man that had spent his life doing hard physical labor in hopes of providing a good life for his family. A man that had buried his own daughter and the mother of his 7 children, leaving him to raise them alone.

The lyric “open the heavens, fling wide the gates” took on new meaning in the context of his passing. I can only imagine how joyous the reunion must have been when he could once again embrace his wife, daughter, parents, siblings and so many others who had passed on before him.

Thank you, Grandpa, for all of the lessons you taught us. Thank you for encouraging me to continue developing my talents. And thank you for allowing me the privilege of being with you in your final moments as you slipped quietly and victoriously below the horizon. I love you, Grandpa! 🕊
